A Good Literary Agent for Science Fiction?

I'm writing a novel for the first time so I need to find a literary agent that is interested in this type of thing. To get an idea of the genre, think of the novelization of a film like Fantastic Four.

All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

When you're writing your first novel, they usually want to see the whole thing before they'll talk to you.

Answer 2

You're writing for the first time. That's great. Remember to get feedback, not just from family who will sugar coat things for you. It's one thing to start writing a novel, but a completely different thing to finish - most people don't finish. Focus on finishing your novel before anything else. You'll have plenty of time to search for an agent or publisher. Never send your first draft, especially as a first time writer, because it'll seldom be in a position to publish. Make sure you polish it as much as it needs to be which could be 4 or 5 drafts before you begin querying it. Sci-fi is a niche genre, so every agent/pub who accepts fiction will not always accept sci-fi. You need to find someone who specifies sci-fi and not just general fiction. If they don't specify sci-fi then chances are they don't represent it. See what types of work they usually represent or publish before you query them. Just remember to keep a realistic perspective. Most manuscript get rejected. People will rarely get their very first novel published. Heck, even esteemed author Stephen King had to write 4 unpublished novels before he finally got his first one, Carrie, published (source: On Writing). When you finish with this one start a new one and improve your skill and you'll see the more you write the better you get. Even Stephen King looks back on his first few published novels and see how horrible they were compared to how he writes today. Good luck. http://www.aaronline.org - has a database of agents. visit their website to see if they rep sci-fi. http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums - you can get feedback for your work here.
