Book writing: How to write a character older than yourself?

I am currently trying to write a book and have a range of characters. I am currently trying to write a profile for a 52 year old and wonder if anyone can give me some tips on how to write a character of that age or even just what to remember when writing about a character that is older than myself. I already understand that maturity is a factor of course.

Answer 1

It helps to know a person of that age range so you know how they act :). Try to think of more mature language and thoughts. mine please? http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AvHeYHCvHtgFH5YIYPCO.1ef5HNG;_ylv=3?qid=20110309164214AAuLCi5

Answer 2

add wisdom, humor, and wittiness. older people are always quick on come-backs. some men grow cynical with age, or show a disliking to the current generation. ;)

Answer 3

Ask a parent or grandparent. Don't you know any one older than yourself?

Answer 4

Well...they probably know what the world is like already. There's less excitement: they've probably gotten married, had a family, had a job, basically experienced all the major milestones people pass in life. Depending on what experiences they've gone through, they could be depressed because of all they've found out about the world...or they could lead a sheltered life like most people I know, and choose to concentrate on the small section of the world they're exposed to. Also, I dont' know how old you are but look to your teachers or parents for inspiration, see how they act and talk and try to base your character off that. Good luck.

Answer 5

imagine yourself at that age.

Answer 6

is it male or female ....there wll be quite a difference ...I think ...though I can't quite remember that far back

Answer 7

Have you met a 52 year old? If so, use them as a springboard, and if you can get base feelings and emotions from them you can assume the rest.

Answer 8

Real life is the best teacher. Think of older people you know, family members, educators, neighbors and even passerbys and observe how they speak, how they look, observe how they act. Talk to people to understand what their mindsets are. I also say watch movies/TV geared towards an older audience--learn what the concerns and the issues are for a typical person in their 50s.

Answer 9

if you know someone around their age you could interview them and talk to them about their life. mostly old people are wise, calm, and a little humourous. my grandpa interviewed me and hes 60 because hes writing a book with a girl my age in it so he interviewed me to see what a girl my age would say to what the main character (her brother) said to her. i thought it was pretty cool and good to do that so thats what i mainly recommend you to do (interview someone around 52 that you know to see how they act and their attitudes and what they would most likely say to people.)

Answer 10

How does anyone create characters? The answer is simply what we perceive others and what they do in certain situations. Surely you know someone in your family or friends who is fifty two years of age. Base it on them, as long it is not so nasty, you can put them through the situations in the story. Might turn out clumsy, wise or even mature about it. Better still ask the 52 year old questions; put him/her on the spot, and of course tell why you doing it; because you will be counted as annoying.
