Most style manuals expect anything under a hundred to be written, rather than numerical. Answer 2
Style manuals differ on this slightly, but consistency is the most important factor. If you write "John scored thirty goals over a six month period" that would be acceptable, but since this is a sports article there are going to be a lot of numbers. Scores especially are better handled numerically, as in "The Reds won it, 37-31" rather than "The Reds won it, thirty-seven to thirty one." You could do it that way but as a reader, which way would you rather see it in a book?
There's an online style manual from University of Minnesota which has a section on numbers in text:

They don't address sports per se, but I think it will cover your needs.
I think it's terrific that you're doing that! So many things are forgotten about the everyday events of our lives and it's good you're aiming to preserve some of those. There's a gentleman in the town where I live who is trying to do something similar for baseball. He's combing through old newspapers and trying to interview people but there are things that may never be found out. Good luck! << GO BACK to questions
