Good day, web-surfers, I would love it if you could provide the names and websites of any reliable literary agents that would be interested in historical fiction, more specifically the colonization of England by the Vikings in the 800's and the Viking Age in general. I have a complete (albeit unedited) novel of 160,000 words just waiting to be published! Thank you in advance! /Jakob
@Joss
You seem like a horrible person, one not averse to insult and berate strangers. Do you not think I have researched? The book was finished roughly 6 months ago, and I have been going through it, emending ever since. I simply asked if anyone knew any certain agent(s) that had a particular interest in this topic since I have not found many that do. I am young, and English is not my first language, I am proud of my work and I do not need your asinine put-downs. Thou villain.

Jakob, you're not yet ready. No literary agent is going to rep a historical by an unknown author which is 160K. Historical fiction tends to top out at 135K, so you've got a lot of weeding to do.
When you have your novel as polished as it can possibly be, go to the best bookstores around. Imagine your book on the shelves. Identify what its competitors would be. Note titles, authors, and publishers of at least twenty. More is better. (Camera?)
Back home, do your homework. Look up each publisher's guidelines for writers wanting to submit. If you cannot find them on the publisher's website, that means they deal only with agents. Look up the word agent with the individual book titles and with the authors' names. Learn which agents brokered the deals for the books which would compete with yours. That's your A-list. Answer 2
Surely you're kidding. You want someone to take the time out of their day to research some agents for YOUR book? Does that sound okay to you? Does that seem reasonable?
Why can't you take the time to research your own agents and build your own agent list? That's not my job. I have my own book I'm writing and I'm looking for agents who rep what I write. Why should I also take the time to look for agents who rep what YOU write?
Stop being lazy and do your own research.
If it's unedited then it's not complete. If you've spent this much time writing your novel and you're about to spend a lot more time editing then why can't you take the necessary time to research for your own agents? Researching agents is, after all, much easier than writing and editing the novel...
I've heard that historicals can be up to 150,000 words, but 160,000 still puts you over the limits. If it's any good after you've polished it then you might find someone who might give you advice (like to cut X amount of words and resubmit for another chance), though, don't count it.
ADDING: What's insulting and being a "horrible" person is expecting people to your work for you. I'm happy that you're proud of your work, as you should be. It's a lot of time and effort to put into writing a novel. Now, why would you risk all that effort by not building your own agent list? How will you know if anyone is pointing you to a scam? You avoid it by doing research and putting together your own agent list with reputable agents. And, for the record, YES, I've seen people on this site recommend known scam agents And publishers.
I didn't comment on your English or your age. I commented on why you'd want someone to do your research for you?
And, since I'm being a Darth Sith, in your opinion, I'll give you some sites to check. It also depends on in which country you to try and publish. these are American literary agents. Agentquery.com and aaronline.org. You'll have to go through the agents' websites to see what they represent. << GO BACK to questions
