What to use for book writing: a computer or pen and paper?

I want to write a book. Which is easier?

All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

I'd a imagine a computer would be the best route, although you should save/back up your work as you go along.

Answer 2

Which do you prefer to use usually? Most books these days are written on the computer, and have been since the 80's.

Answer 3

Well, I'd say a computer. You're going to have to type it up eventually, anyway. Just make sure you back your work up to disks or email it to yourself frequently.

Answer 4

i agree with the first answerer. A computer would be the best choice because you can make changes to your story. If you write in a paper with the pen, you will probably have to start over and over again. Plus, you can save your document. (safe-keeping)

Answer 5

Your best bet would be a computer, if your gonna use pen and paper consider using pencil instead. And I would use a notebook instead then put it on a computer. But just using the computer alone is probably better.

Answer 6

a computer definitely. however just a warning, when you do, you should save it on several different things. i'm working on two books right now.. i have one saved on my computer and in my email. computer obviously to easily open it, email in case my computer crashes.

Answer 7

i'd do it on the computer it makes editing and rewriting a heck of a lot easier just be sure to save it in multiple ways just in case anything might happen and you end up losing all your work

Answer 8

You know, computer would be easiest, in my opinion.

Answer 9

It depends on the person. Some writers prefer writing by hand. I cannot hand write fast enough to keep up with my thoughts. And here are some links for writing communities (and other writing resources.) http://sites.google.com/site/allusionsanddreams/home/resources-1

Answer 10

Your best bet is to believe in your own talents as a writer & go with this. All great writers, just relay on four things 1. imagination 2. writing skills 3. type writer / computer 4.good editor BUT You have a computer, I suspect, so use the included word processor. If you have logged in through an internet cafe type service, then paper and pen or typewriter are next best. AND The only software I have ever used is Microsoft Word. Sorry but no software can make you a better writer. If you know how to use the advanced settings on Word, it does many things that will surprise you. Skip the software. It is the equivalent of buying a Humvee when all you need is a car. Instead invest in a couple good research books. A style book. A copy of The First Five Pages. A copy of On Writing. Writers Market. They will help you far more than any software ever will. Read this site How to Write a Novel: The Snowflake Method http://www.advancedfictionwriting.com/art/snowflake.php

Answer 11

for me writng on the computer is way easier. i have bad handwriting and i dont spell very well all the time. the spell checker is my best friend lol. but it seems like when i am writing on paper it slows me down because my brain is working faster than my fingers can write. also if you do go to write on the computer dont just save your work, but try to print it on occaison too. that way if something happens you dont have to restart everything!

Answer 12

for me its a computer, i dont have to worry about spelling, and when i want a word that i cant think of i just write a word that means the same thing then check the thesaurus. this way i dont get stuck on the little things. Also sometimes i write something, read it over and realize that paragraph fits better somewhere else.. all i have to do is copy and paste.

Answer 13

I suggest writing it free hand first, to make sure your happy with it, at least, I do because it helps me. Then type it up, fixing any errors you might have made when you wrote it, that way you don't have to proof read it again if you don't want to. If you do it free hand, then you can add pictures of the characters or scenes in the book if you like, and I've always thought it easier to draw on paper rather than use a computer program.

Answer 14

Personally i love to write on paper as i find i can spend more time thinking about ways to say a certain sentence or Dialogue and then choose the best. If you write on a computer which i do more often unfortunately you just jot down everything and it means more editing.

Answer 15

I am currently writing and i find it best to jot down my key ideas or events in the story on paper and then turn it into the actual story on the computer. Best of luck!

Answer 16

I am writing my novel with a pen. A really good one, Pilot G2, I believe. I filled a binder with lined paper, and that's where I write. That way, I can rearrange and take out pages as I please. I have multiple reasons for doing this. My family uses our one computer excessively, so I would never get much of a chance to type. I can write with my binder wherever I please, and writing longhand just feels more natural to me.
