Why is the writing in the book "burned" (Ellen Hopkins) have strange positioning of words?
I am reading the book burned by ellen hopkins, and i was just curious why are the pages so short and only have few sentences on some pages? and some of them have pages where the words are scattered, or one word alone written off to the side. Is it some sort of book writing style? Just wondering, anyone know?

I have read five books by Ellen Hopkin's (one of them being ''Burned'') and I visit the Ellen Hopkins page and her myspace page regularly.
These books are written this way because they are poetry. Burned is the least poetic out of all of the books. You should read Crank because it is very poetic.
The words written on their own are made to be more of an impact.
They are scattered meaning the character's mind is scattered (in this book, Pattyn.)
In Crank and Glass if the character is talking about alachol (for example) the words might be written in the shape of a wine bottle.
I would recommend reading more of her books. It took me about a third of Crank to get used to the writing stlye and really enjoy it because it is a very unusual type of writing. I hope you enjoy the books, they are one of my favourites to read. All of Ellen's books are fantastic! << GO BACK to questions
