A 'brief synopsis' is one page, single-spaced summary of the book in third person present tense, capturing its general tone (dramatic, funny, whatever). It tells the whole story, including the ending, and uses no dialogue. Its main focus is the main character, his/her conflict, goal, ambition, etc., what stands in the way of it, and how it's achieved (or isn't). It does not need to incorporate all the characters or all the subplots, although if you can fit in the more important of each, you should.
There's an art to writing short synopses, and you will probably have to write yours over and over before you have one you're satisfied with. One approach is to jot down what happens in each scene, section, or chapter, and use that as your foundation for the first draft. Answer 4
First off all, when you first start querying agents, they only want a pitch. Basically, that's abotu 3-6 lines of a story with the hook in it that will reel them in and want to make them ask for more. It is similiar to the blurb of a book - the text on the back cover.
If they like it and ask for a sypnosis, your sypnosis can be as long as 3 pages. Explain every detail as concisely as possible (Sounds like an oxymoron, I know) and remember that IT'S NOT A BLURB. Do not keep any secrets/ have them anticpating. Tell the whole story and plot, including the twist and surprise ending.
Good luck and hope this helped! << GO BACK to questions
