All Answers To QuestionsAnswer 1
Probably anything by Toni Morrison.
There's also great African American fiction throughout the 20th century. Answer 2
Go to amazon.com and click on african american writers, or go to your local library, or try Black Expressions Book Club, that's a bookclub with mostly African-American authors. Answer 3
Talk to the reference staff at your local public library. Some novels these days come with book group suggestions, etc. Use available info instead of trying to invent it yourself.

Terry McMillan- more light hearted work- relationships, etc.- How Stella Got Her Groove
Alice Walker- more serious- often painfully sad but very important African American novelist- The Color Purple
Toni Morrison is a must (as stated above)- Song of Solomon is my favorite
Zora Neale Hurston- Their Eyes Were Watching God
and
Maya Angelou- mostly inspirational and biographical work like I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings
