i'm starting a book club and looking for books written by african americans in the last 10-15 yrs.

All Answers To Questions

Answer 1

Probably anything by Toni Morrison. There's also great African American fiction throughout the 20th century.

Answer 2

Go to amazon.com and click on african american writers, or go to your local library, or try Black Expressions Book Club, that's a bookclub with mostly African-American authors.

Answer 3

Talk to the reference staff at your local public library. Some novels these days come with book group suggestions, etc. Use available info instead of trying to invent it yourself. If there is a college nearby, you could talk to somebody in the English department.

Answer 4

Terry McMillan- more light hearted work- relationships, etc.- How Stella Got Her Groove Alice Walker- more serious- often painfully sad but very important African American novelist- The Color Purple Toni Morrison is a must (as stated above)- Song of Solomon is my favorite Zora Neale Hurston- Their Eyes Were Watching God and Maya Angelou- mostly inspirational and biographical work like I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings Wish I could join... these women are amazing story tellers...

Answer 5

Daniel Black E. Lynn Harris Eric Jerome Dickey Edward P. Jones Toni Morrison Terri McMillan Maya Angelou Laura Castoro Are current mainstream African American authors.

Answer 6

Caryl Phillips was born in the West Indies and lives in England but has written about the slave trade and early African Americans so not African American but African West Indian Briton....a slightly different perspective I think you might find interesting as a contrast for the usual suspects Toni Morrison and Alice Walker.

Answer 7

In addition to the recommendations given above, I'd highly recommend checking out Colson Whitehead's books- "The Intuitionist" and "John Henry Days" are two of my favorites.

Answer 8

Kaffir Boy by Mark Mathabane

Answer 9

Those were all good recommendations. Check out www.aalbc.com They have an archive of books by AA authors with reviews. They also have a listing of books due to be published in the next several months. AALBC is a large site with an extensive content on AA books. Another good resource is: Read the latest about books, writing, and publishing on our blog http://mosaicbooks.blogspot.com/ and at www.MosaicBooks.com Good luck on your book club. Were are you located?
