Its hard. Very hard. Its not just about having a good concept. Its about being able to write it effectively. For some reason, people seem to think that writing is easy and writing books for kids is a piece of cake. In some ways, its actually harder than writing books for adults. And the publishing world is full of competition. Publishers only want the best and they get tins of submissions each year. Even if you do manage to get your story published, it's not likely you'll get rich from it. Most professional published authors have another job because writing books simply isn't enough to pay the bills. So realistically, no, it's not a good way to earn a living for most people.

Just go to your local bookshop and compare the size of the children's section with that of the adults' section. Most people who write fiction don't earn any money from it.
