I'm writing a novel and was planning on self-publishing. My question is "why is there such a price difference with some printers?" For instance, one printer wants to charge me 13.53 for each book i have printed, another printer only wants 3.81 for the same job. I've actually shopped around quite a bit and it looks like 80% or more of printers want a 13 to 15 dollar price. Is there something I am missing or are the expensive ones just out to rip people off and take advantage of new authors?

I've written 12-15 short stories. One has been published in a small magazine and another has won honorable mention in a contest sponsored by Writer's Digest magazine. I would like to see my stories collected in book form, not necessarily to sell the book, but mainly to have my stories in a professional-looking book. What would be the best (in terms of cost and professional appearance) self-publishing place to bring my stories to in order to get them in book form? Thanks.

I'm not talking about if it's possible or not, I'm just wondering if it would be pointless. I published my first book recently through self publishing, but wasn't very satisfied with the result. My sequel is finished now, and it's hard to understand unless you've read the first. If I published it traditionally, would it not do well because most people have not read the first?
