The biggest mistake amateur e-book publishers make is to write a book on a subject that
only interests them, and then try to persuade prospective buyers that they should have the
same interests in buying the book. This isnt the best way to succeed at e-book
publishing. Find out what your readers want and then hand it to them, in the form of an
e-book.
Research the niche, discover the market, and know what your readers want. Then
go about the business of putting your ideas into words, the information your readers will
gladly pay their hard-earned money for.
STEP 1 - WHAT SUBJECT INTERESTS YOU?
Make a list of all the things you could confidently write about. It's much easier, and
less work, to write about a subject that interests you. Do you have hobbies that others
would be interested to hear about? Just because you are knowledgeable about a particular
subject, dont assume others are sure to know the same. You would be amazed at what
some people don't know.
Once you have picked your subject, research the niches where you could turn a
profit with this subject. Don't discourage yourself that the niche is popular. This might be
an advantage. A popular niche is proof that a market exists, and you can make money in
this niche. Just be sure your product is superior to the competition.
STEP 2 - FIND YOUR READERS' ITCH AND SCRATCH IT!
You need to know what their problems are and find out what is missing in their
lives. The answer to these questions, and others, should be your main line of attack. You
need to focus on what they don't have -- sometimes you have to tell them what they are
missing and why they need it. If you e-book fulfills your readers needs and desires, they
will reward you financially.
STEP 3 - DO YOUR RESEARCH.
Be prepared when you start writing. Don't sit at your desk one day and then decide
that today, here and now, is the time to write your first e-book. It wont work. Or maybe it
will, but one thing is for sure, it will be disjointed, facts will be missing and the general
flow will not be right.
You must first research your subject; collect all the information you possibly can,
put it into a specified folder on your PC. And when you feel you have everything
together, then you can proceed to bring it all together in an organized manner that is
fluent and easy to read.
STEP 4 - CREATE YOUR MASTERPIECE.
Get down to it and start writing. Refer to your folder (the one where you stored all
of your researched material), choose from your organized lists and start writing.
When it comes to writing, start and don't stop. Write down everything that comes to
mind. Write in bite sized chunks if you have to; otherwise you may suffer writers block.
Most importantly, keep your writing simple. Keep in-mind the average reading age of
adults is twelve. So don't write as if you've just devoured two dictionaries and a thesaurus
for breakfast. Conversational, everyday language is the key.
STEP 5 - CHECK YOUR WORK.
Now is the time to re-read and edit your work, check spellings and grammar, and
peruse through it several times. If it's hard for you to read, it will be twice as hard for
others to read; hopefully you knew what you were trying to say! Many authors use an
English grammar checker called
WhiteSmokeSoftware to correct their manuscripts.
Pass it on to a member of the family or a good friend, ask them to read it through
and give you an unbiased opinion as to whether they understood it; and if not, why not? If
necessary, re-write it. Remember, the finished product will bear your name for the entire
world to see.
STEP 6 - BRING IT TO AN END.
Somewhere along the line you have to decide that your book is finished. Snippets
of information that you regret not having used will crop up later. Don't worry about it; the
main thing is that you have passed on some form of information, no matter how small, to
someone who was in search of that information, otherwise they wouldn't have paid for it.
Bring your manuscript to a close. Here is where your work starts. You have written
your e-book, now go out and SELL IT!
