Caribbean Folktale Teaches Perseverance

In Where is Simon, Sandy? Newbury, MA author Donna Marie Seim retells a Caribbean folktale that has been passed down by word of mouth for many generations. The story of a little donkey that wouldn’t quit has long been an inspiration for children on the Islands of Turks and Caicos and is sure to inspire children everywhere in this beautifully illustrated picture book.
When Sandy the donkey wakes one day, her master, Simon, is no where to be found. Despite his absence, Sandy carries on with their daily task of delivering water to the townspeople. At each house, Sandy stops just long enough for Simon to have taken the water pail off her cart (which is missing now without Simon) and then moves on to the next house. The children are the first to notice the strange scene of Sandy alone on the streets, they ask “Where is Simon, Sandy?” but the little donkey can only shake her head and continue on her journey. The children form a parade behind Sandy until they finally reach the home of the doctor who rushes to see what has happened to Simon. In the midst of a confusing time, Sandy does the only thing she knows how and is ultimately able to bring help for Simon.
The Turks and Caicos Islands consist of forty islands and cays southeast of the Bahamas in the eastern Caribbean. Cockburn Town, the capital island of Grand Turk sets the scene for Where is Simon, Sandy? and is where thousands of tourists visit as a popular cruise ship destination. The Turks and Caicos National Museum is located here and provides a children’s programme that focuses on teaching the culture and rich heritage of the islands. All proceeds from the sale of Where is Simon, Sandy? will benefit this museum programme.
