AMERICAN MEDICAL DOCTOR APOLOGIZES,

STARTS FUND TO HELP VIETNAM WAR VICTIMS

HO CHI MINH CITY, VIETNAM – An American medical doctor has pledged $25,000 to establish a new Failure to Atone fund in Vietnam to help Vietnamese children and victims of the Vietnam War.

The Failure to Atone fund was named for Dr. Allen Hassan’s new book, Failure to Atone: The True Story of a Jungle Surgeon in Vietnam (Failure to Atone Press, Hardbound, $29.95, ISBN # 0-9776049-0-X).
The new fund was announced in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) on April 30, Vietnam’s Independence Day, in conjunction with the launch of the Vietnamese edition of Failure to Atone and a well-publicized speech by Dr. Hassan.

Allen Hassan, MD, JD, DVM, is a latter-day Dr. Tom Dooley who served as the only doctor in a small jungle hospital for Vietnamese civilians during the height of the Vietnam War. A former US Marine, Dr. Hassan witnessed atrocities and the horror of war while a volunteer doctor with an American Medical Association program in 1968, which turned him into a pacifist. While in Vietnam for a weeklong promotional tour, Dr. Hassan also publicly apologized to the Vietnamese for what had happened to their country.

At a press conference, First News-Tri Viet Publishing, Ltd., a major Vietnamese book and newspaper publisher which is printing the Vietnamese edition of the book, also pledged $3,120 to the Failure to Atone Fund.

Lieutenant General Nguyen Viet Thanh, a respected military hero in Vietnam, has agreed to co-chair the fund with Dr. Hassan.
