Dr. Spalding to be keynote speaker for the Ontario Adoption Council Conference

Toronto (ON)- “Roots, Wings and Other Things; A Mother’s True Stories On Transracial Adoptions” is a chronicle of Donna Spalding’s “unplanned” interracial family, which started off in the usual way; with the birth of the Spalding’s first and only biological child and grew, through numerous adoptions, to the unusually large number of eight children.

“My husband and I were among the first people in Canada to raise an interracial family, because transracial adoption was not permitted in Canada until the 1970s. Even now, there is very little Canadian research on transracial adoptions and whether they’ve been successful” Donna explains “This book begins to fill that gap by providing anecdotal evidence (literally) that interracial families work.”

The book released by Rain Publishing Inc. isn’t intended to be didactic—it’s simply the story of a non-traditional family that endeavors to demonstrate families do not have to be white, middle class, and consist of a couple with two kids to be normal, that adoption is good for children and parents alike, and that family is more important than race or culture.

Roots, Wings and Other Things” also contains a bonus section at the back of the novel of letters from the Spalding children, these letters are unedited special notes from their hearts regarding their experiences being part of a blended family.

Dr. Spalding will be the keynote speaker for the Ontario Adoption council / Adoption Conference on the 14th of April at the Metro Toronto Convention Center Toronto, followed with a workshop on adoption in the afternoon.
