Celebrate Poetry Month on Mars

April is National poetry month, and it’s no joke that celebrated novelist J.D. Landis will release his newest children’s book on the 1st of the month. Yes, Cars on Mars: and 49 Other Poems for Kids on Earth will make its debut on April Fool’s Day, but you’d have to be a fool not to fall in love with these witty rhymes, intriguing insights, and such characters as the angriest boy in the world, the girl who rode on the wind, the perfect kid, the lowly mosquito, and the worm who turned into a fish. Right from the get-go Landis unleashes his special blend of humor and truth, covering topics from animals and vegetables to minerals and almost anything else on Earth (or Mars). In the midst of his silliness, Landis manages to instill some subtle wisdom on his young readers with poems like “Fast Food,” which quips,

I chased that food until I tripped.
I scraped my hand. My pants were ripped.
And that’s how I found out it’s true:
Fast food isn’t good for you!

and “The Mirror,” which gives children a literal glimpse into the future;

“A mirror is merely a window
Through which every child must climb.
Your enemy waits right inside it.
And that enemy is called Time.”

As if the poems weren’t enough, Landis’s literary talents are multiplied when his wife Denise adds her artistic ability to the mix. Her simple, yet profound line drawings immensely heighten the reader’s poetic journey to Mars, Pluto, and ultimately, back home to Earth.

J.D. Landis is a silly (but in a good way) man who loves children (his own, but not alone), poetry, his wife (what an artist!), animals, vegetables (except beets), minerals, and everything else (almost) on Earth (and on Mars). He was born and raised in Springfield, Massachusetts, and graduated from Yale College. He was publisher and editor-in-chief of William Morrow & Co. in New York and won the Roger Klein Award for Editing and the Advocate Humanitarian Award. He (under various pseudonyms) is the author of novels Lying in Bed, which won the Morton Dauwen Zabel Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, Longing, which was a New York Times Notable Book, and Artist of the Beautiful. His work has been published as well in England, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, and Portugal. He has also published six novels for young readers, including The Sisters Impossible, which was an International Reading Association Children’s Choice.

When she isn’t drawing, Denise Landis spends her time cooking and gardening. She is the author of the New York Times cookbook Dinner for Eight: 40 Great Dinner Party Menus for Friends and Family. She has four children and is married to a silly man who shows her his poetry before he shows it to anyone else.

J.D. and Denise Landis live in Exeter, NH, and are both available for interviews and events.
