Crossing 13 One Story among Thousands

By Carrie Stark Hugus

Denver, CO June 2, 2008 -- Crossing 13: Memoir of a Father's Suicide is a captivating coming of age story about a thirteen-year-old girl whose life is instantly altered upon finding her father dead from suicide. As she rides the emotional waves of, shock, guilt, confusion, shame and the obsession with WHY, she begins to embrace her new normal life.

“Few authors can approach the most difficult subjects in a manner where the reader not only receives solutions, but also feels deeply understood and validated. In Crossing 13: Memoir of a Father's Suicide, Carrie Stark Hugus accomplishes this through sharing her deeply personal journey. This book shall touch all who read it, and for those who have suffered the loss of a loved one through suicide, it offers immediate help, hope, and new direction,” says Dr. Lee Jampolsky, best selling author of Healing the Addictive Personality and Smile for No Good Reason

Approximately 24,000 children, aged 18 and under, suffer from the death of a parent to suicide each year in the United States. Based on this estimate, there are over 700,000 children who became survivors of suicide in the last 29 years. Of this group, eighty percent grieve for their father. Carrie Stark Hugus is among their company . . . a teen survivor who lost her father to suicide.

The largest number of suicide deaths is among men, between 25 and 44 years of age. Her father is part of this group . . . he was 38 years old when he died. Although middle-age men are the largest number of suicide deaths, many who have families, there is little information or focus to help the children left behind. Crossing 13: A Memoir of a Father's Suicide is a personal account, written as a thirteen-year-old whose life changed suddenly and dramatically during and after the death of her father.

“This courageous account of one little girl’s journey to understand why shows us that suicide changes everyone it touches and it takes a lifetime to recover. Crossing 13 will open your eyes, break your heart and touch your soul,” explains Tamra Monahan, author of Colorado's Best Bed and Breakfasts.
