Elderly card players make deadly pact, bringing terror to the hometown of Hillary Rodham Clinton

By Cheryl Hagedorn

Writing instructor, Cheryl Hagedorn writes from experience, realistically portraying the center where she teaches as the background for the murders in her new novel, PARK RIDGE: A Senior Center Murder. “Hagedorn does a nice job of recreating daily business at a Senior Center… . Human nature drives her plot, and one can imagine the seething resentments, even in a place that should be completely non-threatening. But there's the rub. Take a seemingly neutral environment and add passion and cruelty, and one has an excellent plot” (Midwest Book Review).

Grim or uproarious? “I think of murder as grim. I never dreamed that reviewers would find the book funny,” says Hagedorn. Reader Views (www.readerviews.com) wrote, “This book is uproarious!” also calling it “delightful” and “extremely funny.” Hagedorn admits that, since she restricted the characters to using whatever came to hand, the murder by banana was her most creative effort.

An early reader responded, “I'm a banana lover and would prefer not to think about bananas as an implement of destruction (I have one banana each day - an apple too, for that matter).” But Hagedorn refused to change her mind. The leader of the Park Ridge Senior Center book discussion group said Hagedorn’s decision made PARK RIDGE distinctive: “I’ve never read a book where the killer used a banana.”

First-time novelist Cheryl Hagedorn, former Salvation Army officer, computer programmer, and writing instructor for the Chicago Department of Aging and the Park Ridge Senior Center, has an MA in Writing from DePaul University and is a member of the Emily Dickinson International Society and the Illinois Philological Association.
