Gettysburg author wins Best Regional Fiction award for Civil War novel

By Jessica James

Patriot Press has announced that Shades of Gray: A Novel of the Civil War in Virginia, by Jessica James, has won a silver medal for Best Regional Fiction in the 2008 Independent Publisher Book Awards.

Since its debut in January, the book has received high praise from Civil War historians and authors, and continues to garner favorable reviews in the historical and romantic fiction genres. Foreword Magazine notes that readers will find the attention to historical detail “impeccable,” while Book Review Journal calls the novel well written and expertly executed. “You cannot leave this book unchanged in your understanding of the souls of the Civil War.”

Lauded for its ability to evoke intense emotion, Shades of Gray presents the passionate debate of The War Between the States in an epic tale of love and adventure. Bookpleasures.com says “the intense sorrow, frustration, and ultimately love, seem to transcend the pages to settle in the very marrow of the reader’s bones.”

Despite its length (528 pages), the Historical Novel Society calls the book “a page-turner and quick read,” as does Civil War author Virginia Morton who praised it as “an incredible achievement and a treasure.”

The Independent Publisher Book Awards have been awarded since 1996 to the best independently published books of the year. This year’s contest attracted more than 3,100 entries from 49 states and 16 countries.

Shades of Gray is available at local bookstores, Amazon, and from the publisher at www.patriotpressbooks.com.
