North Jersey publishing house will get your book into print

By Christina Mancuso

Is there a book in you? Getting published has never been easier, faster or less expensive. Long Dash Publishing, a print-on-demand and self-publishing company based on Orchard Street in Hackensack, offers a range of personalized services to help authors get their books into print.

Authors can walk in with a manuscript on a disk, and Long Dash will print it on-site and hand back a perfect-bound trade paperback with a color cover of the author’s own design, said Tim Harper, a journalist, author and publishing consultant who founded Long Dash with his partner James Potter.

“James and I love working with other writers, especially first-time authors,” Harper said. “We’re providing a small, personalized alternative to the big print-on-demand houses such as iUniverse and Xlibris. We’ll talk to you, we’ll listen to you, and we’ll make your books one at a time, partly by hand.”

“Those big POD houses typically charge several hundred dollars for your first five books, and it usually takes months,” Potter added. “We’re a lot cheaper and faster. We can fill the typical small order in a week or two and bigger orders in three or four weeks, but on occasion we’ve done simple orders in a few days or even overnight.”

For the standard Long Dash book, prices begin at $175 for the first 10 copies and go down after that: $125 for the next 10 copies, and $85 for every 10 copies thereafter. Prices go up for books longer than 250 pages and for paper or cover upgrades. Authors can format their books themselves or have Long Dash handle the formatting starting at $75. Authors retain 100 percent of their rights.

Additional services include proofing, editing, book coaching, publishing consulting, copyright and ISBN registration, cover design and more. Books published through Long Dash are offered for sale through the Web site, www.longdash.com, and authors are paid a 25 percent royalty. Long Dash also helps its authors arrange distribution and marketing through a sister company that specializes in listing self-published books with the major online booksellers (Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, etc.) and with the national distributors that supply both independent and chain bookstores.
