Veselik Debut Novel, "Weep Not for the Vampire," Lauded by Horror Critics

By William A. Veselik

Author William A. Veselik’s debut novel, entitled “Weep Not for the Vampire,” has been consistently lauded by national critics in the horror literature industry since the novel’s December release.

“I’m truly gratified that the people who know the horror genre and read and write about it on a daily basis, have chosen to endorse my novel,” said Veselik, who resides in Marion (Virginia) but is employed as Public Relations Coordinator at Wytheville Community College. “A first-time novelist is always a little gun-shy about what reviewers will write, but I’ve been very pleasantly surprised that they like my book.”

One of the first reviews of “Weep Not for the Vampire” appeared online in “The Harrow: Original Works of Fantasy and Horror” (Vol. 10, No. 1). Reviewer Dru Pagliassotti wrote: “‘Weep Not for the Vampire’ is a surprisingly fresh vampire novel that brings a new perspective to this much-overworked genre. If you enjoy vampire novels but are getting a little tired of the same old thing, pick up ‘Weep Not for the Vampire,’ he added. “This little novel is worth the effort.”

“The Harrow” review was followed quickly by Nick Cato’s opinion published in the February issue of “The Horror Fiction Review.” “It’s been a while since I’ve read a vampire novel, and I forgot how much fun they can be when done the right way,” wrote Cato. “This is author Veselik’s debut novel, and as far as vampire stories go, I can’t see any fan of the The Undead being disappointed. ‘Weep Not for the Vampire’ is a fun, quick read that will sit well with those looking for an old-school monster mash,” he concluded.
“I was really blown away by that review after I received an advance copy,” admitted Veselik. “Still, I was waiting for the other shoe to fall, figuring that some reviewer out there was going to trash my book at any moment, but the next review was even more complimentary.”

Veselik referred to the recently published online review by “Necropsy: The Review of Horror Fiction,” which is associated with the Louisiana State University English Department. “Necropsy” reviewer Tony Fonseca has written the most glowing review of Veselik’s novel to date.

“Now I have read some very good novels from up-and-coming writers with small or independent presses,” writes Fonseca, “however, I was taken completely aback with the maturity, creativity, professionalism, thoughtfulness, and absolute brilliance of this Veselik’s rookie novel. Imagine the goal of changing current fictional vampire conventionality by introducing completely new traits, and then imagine doing that—and doing it to perfection—with your first publication.”

Fonseca added: “I have to credit Veselik with successfully traversing the most important two hurdles that ultimately define whether a novel is both of a high quality and potentially successful or marketable—producing an enjoyable story (plot line) with characters that readers can actually relate to and care about. Veselik’s vampire is the most human (and humane) vampire seen since Suzy McKee Charnas’s ‘The Vampire Tapestry.’”
