Terminal Neglect
Will the next blockbuster drug land you in an early grave?

You trust your doctor with your life, but who does your doctor trust? In the news, we often hear of real-life stories of drug companies removing FDA approved pharmaceuticals from the market because of serious side effects … or even worse. Blurring the lines of ethical practice, it appears as though that they will stop at nothing to convince us, and our doctors, that their medicines are safe and we need them. But are they? Do we? How far will it go before someone puts a stop to this madness? How many innocent people have to die?

Dr. Michael Rushnak captures the all-too-real turmoil in his novel, Terminal Neglect. When Dr. Jonathan Rogers, Michigan Commissioner of Health, interviews with the President for the position of Surgeon General, he finds out just how high up the chain of command the disease has spread. Not the plague, AIDS, or anthrax, but the naked greed that has corrupted even the highest public office. If Dr. Rogers doesn’t want to be a “team player,” it will be more than just his life in danger. Should he sink to the lowest level, fulfilling his life-long dream, or stand firm in his belief that competent, unbiased health care is an inalienable right for each and every American citizen?

But he can’t turn his back to this evil, and the further he digs, the more devious the cast grows as Rogers unveils a secret society of elite, miscreants who call themselves “The Health Club.” By no means a day at the gym, The Health Club’s purpose is to fast track trial medications for FDA approval while they line their pockets with millions in blood money. Who cares if the drugs actually pass clinical testing, what matters is that they’re available and widely marketed. Like their drug-company clients, the members of The Health Club will stop at nothing to get Dr. Rogers support and add his likeability to their devious ballot. Those closest to Rogers fall away as they are either endangered by the members of the ruthless cult or found out to be card-carriers themselves, demanding that he join them in publicly supporting their killer drug, Zazotene. Misplaced loyalty and familial peril drive the Commissioner to the brink. Will Rogers join the web of lies to save his family by neglecting scores of innocent patients, or fight to save the growing number of terminal victims falling prey to The Health Club?

In a day and age where male enhancement and anti-depressant drugs can be seen during every commercial break, and publicized drug reports only relay the positive trial results, Terminal Neglect may not seem too far fetched. Through the prism of Rushnak’s experiences in the health care arena, readers will take a ride to the "dark side" where the worlds of medicine, politics, government, and big business collide in pulsating ethical and mortal conflict. Though this tale is fiction, Dr. Michael Rushnak hopes to provoke thoughtful conversations about improving the health care that we receive, alerting the public to potential dangers lurking just over the edge of the horizon, when those sworn to protect us fail to do so. And when it comes down to the wire, he asks, “Can you completely trust our government to save your life?”
